The beginnings of the resort began in the 1920s, when the first hotel was built. In 1934, the installation of the Pléney cable car allowed the valley to be developed. Winter sports grew in popularity and the people of Morzine built several cable cars. In 1960, Jean Vuarnet, a child from Morzine, became famous for his title of Olympic Champion in Squaw Valley in the downhill event. On his return, he took over the direction of Avoriaz and wanted to open up the magnificent snowfields of Avoriaz to ski lovers and build a resort designed from scratch... Avoriaz was born on paper on 28 December 1962! In 1968, during the Grenoble Olympic Games, the Olympic flame made a diversion through Morzine. The resort continues to develop to offer all the comforts of today's tourism while preserving its roots and architecture of yesteryear.
